Poppies, from an untitled series of Large Flowers, by Katsushika Hokusai, depicts large pink and apricot poppy blossoms with slate-blue foliage rendered in a bold, close-up composition against a pale blue-green ground, with the artist's signature and seal at right. It belongs to an untitled series of large-format flower prints Hokusai produced around 1833-34, late in his career, when he turned repeatedly to closely observed studies of birds and flowers alongside the landscape series that made him famous.
