Hills around the Bay of Moulin Huet, Guernsey, painted by Pierre-Auguste Renoir in 1883 looks down through a steep, densely overgrown valley of gorse and wild grasses toward the pale chalk cliffs and quiet blue water of the bay beyond, the rocky island coastline rendered in loose strokes of ochre, olive, and lavender-gray under a soft Channel Islands sky. Renoir spent six weeks on Guernsey in the late summer of 1883, producing around fifteen views of Moulin Huet's distinctive combination of rugged granite headlands and lush vegetation, a subject unlike anything in his earlier French landscapes. This particular composition, one of the more finished works from the series, shows Renoir beginning to temper his plein-air spontaneity with a more considered, studio-refined approach to landscape.
