Head of a Merino Ram, 19th Century, by J.H.E. Whitney presents a close wood engraving of the ram’s head in fine black-and-white linework, with dense curling wool rendered stroke by stroke around a pair of tightly coiled horns and the straight nose characteristic of the Merino breed. The plate carries the engraver’s signature, “J.H.E. Whitney sc.,” in the lower left; the abbreviation “sc.” marks him as the engraver who cut the block, a practice common on nineteenth-century illustrated plates.
Artist: J.H.E. Whitney, wood engraver. Date: 19th century.
