Haystacks, Effect of Snow and Sun (Meules, Effet de Neige et de Soleil), by Claude Monet renders two grainstacks glowing amber and rose against a snow-covered field, their long blue-violet shadows stretching across the frost beneath a pale, luminous pink sky. Claude Monet (French, 1840-1926), the founder of French Impressionism, painted this canvas at Giverny as part of his celebrated Grainstacks series, using the low winter sun to warm the stacks' snowy caps while the surrounding haze stayed cool and pale.
