Haystack at Giverny, painted by Claude Monet in 1886 shows a single wheat stack rising from a field on the edge of the artist’s newly adopted village, with whitewashed farm buildings and a hedge of trees receding toward a soft, cloud-streaked horizon. Painted several years before Monet devoted an entire series to the same humble subject, this canvas already reveals his growing fascination with recording the shifting light of a single, unremarkable place. It stands as an early study for the celebrated Haystacks series he would begin in earnest in 1890.
