The painting belongs to a celebrated group of harvest subjects from Van Gogh's prolific first summer in Arles, in which he pursued the panoramic breadth and chromatic intensity of the Provençal countryside with characteristic urgency. Its confident structure and luminous palette rank it among the most accomplished landscapes of his Arles period.
