Green Wheat Fields, Auvers, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1890, captures the lush young wheat of the Île-de-France countryside rippling beneath a vast, cloud-streaked sky, rendered in the urgent, expressive brushwork of the final months of his life. Broad sweeps of green and touches of gold and violet convey the fertility of the Auvers plain, while the turbulent sky above hints at the emotional intensity underlying his late landscapes. Painted at Auvers-sur-Oise, where he lived under the care of Doctor Gachet during the last weeks before his death, the work is now held in the National Gallery of Art, Washington.
