Green Wheat Field with Cypress (Champ de blé vert avec cyprès), painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1889, depicts a brilliant green wheat field ripening toward gold, with a tall dark cypress tree rising beside a small white house near Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, distant mountains, and a blue sky scattered with clouds. The cypress was a subject of singular personal resonance for Van Gogh, its dark, flame-like form offering the strongest possible contrast to the surrounding green and gold of the landscape. Painted during his voluntary stay at the Saint-Paul asylum, the work is among his most compositionally confident and visually compelling landscapes of the period.
