Grass and Butterflies, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1887, is an intimate close-up study of a sunlit patch of grass and low flowering shrubs scattered with small white butterflies, painted in Paris during the summer of 1887. Rendered in dense, curling brushstrokes of green, gold, and rose that dispense with any horizon or sky, the composition immerses the viewer directly in the textures of the undergrowth. The painting belongs to a small group of intimate nature studies from his Paris years, when modest natural fragments close at hand became subjects worthy of his full attention.
