Grapes, Lemons, Pears and Apples, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1887, presents a richly varied still life of autumn fruit arranged on a patterned tablecloth, its grape clusters, lemons, pears, and apples rendered in bold complementary colors of yellow against violet and orange against blue. Painted in Paris during a period when he was experimenting intensively with color theory learned from the Impressionists, the composition uses pulsating, directional brushstrokes to energize the tablecloth and create a shimmering field around the fruit. It belongs to a series of fruit still lifes from late 1887 that Van Gogh used as a laboratory for chromatic contrast.
