Garden in Montmartre with Lovers, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1887, depicts a public garden atop the Butte Montmartre where several couples stroll and sit among trees rendered in the broken, colorful brushwork he adopted after encountering the Impressionists in Paris. Figures in dark blue and touches of red punctuate the greenery, giving the scene an intimate, anecdotal quality unusual within his largely unpeopled Montmartre garden series. The painting reflects his growing confidence with plein-air color during his two years in the French capital, living with his brother Theo at rue Lepic.
