Abbey of Clare, County Galway, Ireland, c. 1841 by William Henry Bartlett captures the ivy-cloaked ruins of Claregalway's medieval Franciscan friary rising beside a multi-arched stone bridge over the River Clare, with a fortified tower keep and grazing cattle along the water's edge. Engraved by J. Cousen from Bartlett's original drawing, the scene was published in The Scenery and Antiquities of Ireland (1841), part of Bartlett's celebrated survey of Irish ruins and landscapes. Bartlett (English, 1809–1854) was one of the nineteenth century's foremost topographical illustrators, renowned for steel engravings documenting castles, abbeys, and antiquities across Europe, the Near East, and North America.

Artist: William Henry Bartlett (1809–1854). Date: c. 1841.
