Fuji from Goten-yama at Shinagawa on the Tōkaidō, by Katsushika Hokusai, depicts Mount Fuji across the bay through blossoming cherry trees on Goten-yama hill above Shinagawa, a post town on the Tōkaidō highway just outside Edo and now part of Tokyo, Japan, with travelers resting at a hillside tea house. It is one of the prints from Hokusai’s series Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji, created around 1830 to 1832 in the late Edo period, when the Japanese ukiyo-e master was in his seventies and whose work later helped spark Japonisme among Western Impressionists.
Artist: Katsushika Hokusai (Japanese, 1760–1849). Date: c. 1830–32.
