Fruit on a Table, by Paul Cézanne gathers peaches and pears loosely piled on a blue-rimmed plate and set directly on a rumpled white tablecloth, its folds pushed into sculptural ridges against a dark, loosely brushed background. Cézanne, a French Post-Impressionist painter (1839-1906) who bridged Impressionism and Cubism, returned again and again to this same repertoire of fruit, plates, and draped cloth during his prolific still-life campaigns of the early 1890s, using the simple domestic arrangement to interrogate form, weight, and perspective from every angle.
