In the Valley of the Oise, painted by Paul Cézanne around 1880, presents the same cluster of white walled, red and blue roofed farmhouses gathered behind slender poplars at Saint-Ouen-l’Aumône, seen across a quarry pond that mirrors the village in its still, dark water. Cézanne developed this view of the plain near Auvers-sur-Oise and Pontoise, where he had painted alongside Camille Pissarro since the early 1870s, organizing rooftops and foliage into firm, simplified blocks of color rather than capturing fleeting light.
