L’Estaque, at Dusk, painted by Paul Cézanne around 1871 to 1876, depicts a rocky limestone headland above the Mediterranean, a wind bent pine clinging to the cliff edge and a small stone jetty receding into the pale, fading light of early evening. Cézanne first came to know this fishing village outside Marseille while sheltering there during the Franco-Prussian War and returned often through the 1870s, working here in a darker, more romantic register that preceded the structured, sun struck red roof and blue sea views that would later define his L’Estaque period. The painting, catalogued as L’Estaque, effet du soir, entered the Musée du Louvre in Paris in 1977.
