View from Hyde Park on the Hudson River, New York, by William Henry Bartlett depicts the sweeping river valley near Hyde Park in New York's Hudson Valley, rendered in the Romantic landscape tradition popular in the 1830s. Bartlett, an English topographical artist, traveled extensively along the Hudson to gather sketches for the influential publication American Scenery, capturing the atmosphere and grandeur of the American countryside for European audiences. Born in London in 1809, Bartlett became one of the best-known illustrators of American and Near Eastern landscape views before his death in 1854.
