Bartlett, an English topographical artist, traveled extensively along the Hudson to gather sketches for the influential publication American Scenery, capturing the atmosphere and grandeur of the American countryside for European audiences. Born in London in 1809, Bartlett became one of the best-known illustrators of American and Near Eastern landscape views before his death in 1854.
