Jalais Hill, Pontoise, painted by Paul Cézanne in 1879 to 1881, looks down over the wooded slopes above the Oise valley, red tile roofs and white cottages scattered among terraced fields and tall rows of poplars. Cézanne painted this view during his sustained working relationship with Camille Pissarro at Pontoise, absorbing Pissarro’s dense, structural brushwork while organizing the hillside into interlocking patches of green, ochre, and rose. The canvas today belongs to the LVMH Moët Hennessy collection.
Artist: Paul Cézanne (French, 1839-1906). Date: 1879-81.
