Choose options
Painted in June 1888 during his brief visit to the fishing village of Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer on the Mediterranean coast, Vincent van Gogh's Fishing Boats on the Beach captures the colourful wooden fishing vessels drawn up on the shore with the vivid palette and direct, energetic brushwork of his Arles period at its most joyful. The work reflects his excitement at seeing the sea for the first time since his youth, the brilliant Mediterranean light and the vivid colours of the boats inspiring some of his most exuberant painting. Now held in the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam, it is among the most celebrated of his coastal works. A brilliantly coloured and historically beloved work for any interior drawn to the finest of Post-Impressionism.
