Fishing Boats on the Beach at Les Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1888, depicts a row of brightly painted fishing boats drawn up on the sandy shore of a small Camargue fishing village, their red, green, and blue hulls and tall masts set against a luminous sky and distant sailboats. Van Gogh completed this composition in his Arles studio shortly after a brief visit to the Mediterranean coast, working sketches made on site into a fuller oil study of the boats he had admired at Les Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer. The painting reflects his fascination with the fishing community’s vividly colored vessels and stands among the most cheerful works of his prolific Arles period.
