First Steps, After Millet, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1890, reinterprets Jean-François Millet’s tender engraving of a toddler’s first wobbling steps toward a kneeling father, translating its black-and-white simplicity into Van Gogh’s own vibrant palette of cool greens, soft yellows, and earth-warmed browns. Created in January 1890 during his stay at the Saint-Paul asylum in Saint-Rémy, it belongs to a series of some twenty homages Van Gogh painted after Millet, an artist he revered above all others and whose black-and-white images he treated as a musician treats a score, improvising color onto the borrowed composition.
