Figures on the Beach, c. 1890, by Pierre-Auguste Renoir depicts two fashionably dressed women and a young boy at the water’s edge, with sailboats drifting on the blue-green sea behind them. Renoir, the French Impressionist (1841-1919), painted it as his handling of the figure grew warmer and more solidly modeled, and the work is held in the Robert Lehman Collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
