Figure Study in the Open Air, painted by Claude Monet in 1886, depicts a young woman in a pale dress holding a parasol against a sky filled with drifting clouds, his stepdaughter Suzanne Hoschedé posing outdoors at Giverny, turned toward the right. Monet built the composition with rapid, feathery strokes of blue, white, and green that dissolve the figure into the surrounding light and wind. The work belongs to a pair of large plein-air figure studies from 1886, among the last major figure paintings of his career before he turned decisively toward landscape series.
Artist: Claude Monet (French, 1840-1926). Date: 1886.
