Field with Flowers Near Arles, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1888 depicts a meadow of yellow buttercups and purple irises on the edge of Arles, the town’s rooftops and a line of grey willows visible beneath a strip of blue sky. Van Gogh described the scene to his brother Theo as a Japanese dream, and the canvas, painted during the spring of his Arles period, shows his fascination with the flattened colour patterning of Japanese prints applied to the Provençal countryside.
