Field of Banana Trees, c. 1881, by Pierre-Auguste Renoir (Champ de Bananiers) depicts a dense screen of banana-plant leaves in the Essai garden at Hamma, near Algiers, painted during Renoir's formative journey to Algeria in the spring of 1881. The brilliant North African light and exotic vegetation transformed his palette toward the warmer, more luminous color of his mature Impressionist style, and the painting is now held in the Musée d'Orsay, Paris.
