Field with Poppies, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1889, depicts a sweeping Provençal valley seen from a raised vantage point near the Saint-Paul asylum at Saint-Rémy, its patchwork of grain fields, scattered red poppies and a small farmhouse rendered in the contrasting complementary colours of red and green that Van Gogh favoured. Painted in early June 1889, it was among the first works he completed after being permitted to leave the asylum grounds, its swirling brushwork and plunging perspective capturing the vitality of the Provençal countryside during his rapidly maturing late style.
