Facsimile of a Letter from Vincent van Gogh to Émile Bernard, written 18 March 1888, reproduces one of the most revealing pages of correspondence from Van Gogh’s early days in Arles, complete with his characteristically rushed handwriting and a small pen-and-ink sketch of a man fishing beside a bridge. Émile Bernard, a young Post-Impressionist painter and one of Van Gogh’s closest correspondents, received dozens of such letters exploring color theory, composition, and the two artists’ shared ambitions. This facsimile captures that exchange at the threshold of the most productive period of Van Gogh’s career.

Artist: Vincent van Gogh (Dutch, 1853-1890). Date: 1888.
