Farmhouses at Saintes-Maries, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1888, depicts a narrow village lane lined with steeply thatched fisherman’s cottages, their sloping roofs rendered in cool lilac and rust tones beneath a searing yellow-green sky streaked with rising smoke. Painted during Van Gogh’s brief early-June excursion from Arles to the Mediterranean coast at Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, the canvas balances complementary color contrasts, red and green, blue and orange, yellow and violet, across its composition. It captures his excited discovery of intense southern light barely a month after settling in Provence.
