Enclosed Field with Ploughman, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1889, shows a walled wheat field seen from his window at the Saint-Paul asylum in Saint-Rémy, its wavy, richly coloured furrows sweeping toward a small farmhouse, a pale rising moon, and the distant Alpilles hills. Begun in late August 1889 and completed in early September, the canvas belongs to a series of more than a dozen views Van Gogh painted of this single enclosed field through changing seasons, weather, and times of day. The solitary ploughman and horse, reduced to a few dark strokes, root the sweeping, rhythmic brushwork in the quiet routine of rural labour.
