Factories at Asnières, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1887, captures the industrial fringe of Paris seen from across the Seine, its smoking chimneys and scattered rooftops set against a golden foreground of ripening wheat. Painted during his two years in Paris, the work reflects Van Gogh’s growing fascination with the modern, industrialising landscape at the city’s edge, a subject he explored repeatedly around the suburb of Asnières alongside his contemporaries Bernard and Signac. The bright, high-keyed palette and visible brushwork show the direct impact of Impressionist and Neo-Impressionist colour theory on his developing style.
