Exterior of the Gare Saint-Lazare, Arrival of a Train, painted by Claude Monet in 1877, captures a locomotive emerging onto the open tracks just outside the station, its steam billowing up past the pale apartment buildings that line the surrounding streets. Silhouetted figures and a horse-drawn carriage move through the hazy, fog-like atmosphere rendered in soft greys, blues, and warm ochres. The work belongs to Monet’s celebrated series of twelve Gare Saint-Lazare paintings, several of which were exhibited at the Third Impressionist Exhibition in 1877.
Artist: Claude Monet (French, 1840-1926). Date: 1877.
