Painted in 1884, Claude Monet's Étretat, the Beach and the Porte d'Aval depicts the celebrated Norman cliffs of Étretat, with the great natural arch known as the Porte d'Aval rising at the water's edge in one of the most photographed and painted seascapes in nineteenth-century French art. Monet returned again and again to Étretat throughout the 1880s, painting the same arch and pebbled beach under successive shifts of light, weather, and tide. A historically significant and atmospherically luminous work for any interior drawn to the masterworks of French Impressionism.
