Étretat, the Beach and the Porte d’Aval, painted by Claude Monet in 1883 shows the pebbled beach and towering chalk cliffs of Étretat, with weathered boulders in the foreground and the great natural stone arch of the Porte d’Aval rising in the distance beneath a pale, overcast sky. Monet spent much of February 1883 at Étretat, painting some twenty views of the beach and its three celebrated rock formations, of which the Porte d’Aval became one of his most repeated motifs.
