Étretat, the Beach and the Porte d’Amont, painted by Claude Monet in 1883, depicts fishing boats drawn up on the pebbled shore beneath the towering chalk cliff and natural rock arch at Étretat on the Normandy coast. Monet balances the weight of the cliff against the restless movement of breaking waves and scattered figures along the beach, rendered in cool grays and warm ochre tones. The painting is one of some fifty views Monet made of Étretat between 1883 and 1886, a period defined by his fascination with the dramatic coastal light of Normandy.
