Étretat in the Rain, painted by Claude Monet in 1886 renders the famed Porte d’Aval arch and the needle-like Aiguille rock through a soft curtain of falling rain, the two formations dissolving into a single hazy silhouette of muted greens, grays, and blues. The canvas is among the most restrained and atmospheric of Monet’s many studies of the Étretat cliffs, favoring diffused mood and weather over the sharper detail of his sunlit versions of the same subject.
