Edge of the Cliff, Pourville, painted by Claude Monet in 1882 captures a windswept, wildflower-strewn clifftop above the English Channel near the Norman village of Pourville, its grassy slope falling away toward sailboats scattered across a pale green sea. Painted during one of Monet’s extended stays on the Dieppe coast, the work belongs to a celebrated series in which the painter returned again and again to the same dramatic vantage point, tracking the shifting light and weather over the chalk cliffs. The absence of any figure gives the composition an unusual quietude, letting the eye travel from the richly textured brushwork of the grass to the hazy blue distance.
