Drawbridge at Arles with Washerwomen, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1888, depicts the wooden Langlois drawbridge on the outskirts of Arles, its raised beams silhouetted against a brilliant blue sky as women kneel washing linen at the water's edge. The bold outlines and flat, saturated color zones reveal the influence of the Japanese woodblock prints Van Gogh so admired, while the Dutch-style drawbridge itself echoed the windmills and canals of his native Holland. One of several canvases he devoted to this bridge, the painting captures both homesickness and delight in the vivid light of Provence.
