Black-Headed Gull, c. 1849 by M. Charles d'Orbigny A black-headed gull stands on a pebbled shoreline, its dark hood, pale gray wings, and slender red legs rendered in fine hand-tinted detail against a soft coastal backdrop. The plate is captioned in the original as "Mouette rieuse" (Larus ridibundus) and appears in the Dictionnaire Universel d'Histoire Naturelle, the great mid-19th-century French natural history encyclopedia compiled under the editorship of M. Charles d'Orbigny (French, 1806-1876).
