Undergrowth, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1887, presents a close, almost abstract view of a forest floor, its thick tree trunk wrapped in climbing ivy and framed by a dense screen of dappled golden foliage. Painted during his two-year stay in Paris, the work belongs to a series of undergrowth and woodland studies through which Van Gogh experimented with the broken, divided brushwork of Pointillism and Impressionist colour theory. The tightly cropped, textural composition reveals his growing interest in surface pattern and the decorative flattening later associated with his mature style.
