Delaware Water Gap, by Granville Perkins depicts the river's dramatic passage between forested Kittatinny ridges, with a small party of travelers gathered along the shore beside beached canoes, rendered in the tranquil, atmospheric style of the Hudson River School. Perkins (1830-1895) was an American marine and landscape painter whose work illustrated Picturesque America, the influential 1870s survey of American scenery edited by the poet William Cullen Bryant; this view was engraved by Robert Hinshelwood for that publication.
