Coastal Landscape, c. 1918 by Edvard Munch depicts the rocky, undulating shoreline at Åsgårdstrand, Norway, where sweeping bands of ochre, sepia, and moss-green rock meet pale fjord waters beneath a soft gray sky. Munch, the Norwegian painter best known for The Scream, turned increasingly to landscape in his later years, using the same expressive, emotionally charged brushwork to capture the rugged coastline near his home.
