Class 999 Locomotive of the New York Central and Hudson River Railroad, c. 1893 This engraving depicts the No. 999, a 4-4-0 "American type" steam locomotive built at the New York Central's West Albany Shops to haul the railroad's flagship Empire State Express. On May 10, 1893, the locomotive reportedly reached 112.5 miles per hour near Batavia, New York, making it the first steam locomotive recorded above 100 mph and, for a time, the fastest vehicle in the world.
