Confederate Fortifications, Atlanta, Georgia, c. 1864 by George N. Barnard depicts a line of sharpened wooden palisades and earthwork trenches built to defend the city during the Civil War, with two houses standing amid the cleared battlefield outside Atlanta, Georgia. Barnard, official photographer for the U.S. Army's Chief Engineer's Office, documented Sherman's fortifications and the aftermath of the Atlanta campaign, producing what remains one of the most reproduced photographic records of the war's Western Theater.
