Rebel Works in Front of Atlanta, Georgia, c. 1864 by George N. Barnard shows a Confederate artillery emplacement built into the earthwork trenches defending the city, with two fieldpieces mounted behind timber revetments, a canvas tent, and a soldier keeping watch atop the parapet outside Atlanta, Georgia. Barnard, official photographer for the U.S. Army's Chief Engineer's Office, produced this image as part of his extensive documentation of Atlanta's fortifications following the city's capture, work later published in his 1866 album Photographic Views of Sherman's Campaign.
