City of Louisville, by Asa Coolidge Warren, depicts a nineteenth-century railroad trestle bridge spanning the Ohio River, with a paddle-wheel steamboat passing beneath as the city's skyline rises along the far bank. Warren was an American illustrator (1819-1904) who contributed numerous townscape views to Picturesque America, the D. Appleton & Co. survey edited by William Cullen Bryant; this plate, engraved by E. P. Brandard, captures the growing industrial ambition of the young river city at the height of the steamboat era.

Artist: Asa Coolidge Warren (1819-1904). Date: 1872.
