Cincinnati, Ohio, from the Kentucky Hills, c. 1856 by Middleton, Wallace & Co. presents a panoramic view of the city along a bend in the Ohio River, its church spires and rooftops crowded onto the peninsula below, with steamboats plying the water and grazing livestock in the wooded foreground on the Kentucky side. Middleton, Wallace & Co., a Cincinnati lithography and publishing firm active in the 1850s, produced elevated city views of this kind that captured the booming river metropolis at the height of the steamboat era.
