Charing Cross Bridge, the Thames, by Claude Monet depicts the railway bridge spanning London's River Thames, its structure dissolving into drifting fog beneath a luminous, sun-streaked sky, with the silhouette of the Houses of Parliament emerging faintly at right. Monet (French, 1840–1926), the leading figure of French Impressionism, painted the scene from a balcony at the Savoy Hotel during his celebrated London campaign, one of roughly three dozen views of the bridge he produced to capture the city's shifting fog and light.
