Centipede, Wood Cranesbill & Mushroom, by Joris Hoefnagel & Georg Bocskay is a jewel-like Renaissance folio pairing a segmented centipede and a delicate purple wood cranesbill blossom with a plump tan mushroom, joined along a single rose-hip branch beneath a page of gilded calligraphic text. It originates from the ‘Mira Calligraphiae Monumenta,’ a model book of calligraphy begun by the Hungarian scribe Georg Bocskay in 1561–62 and later illuminated with naturalistic flora and fauna by the Flemish miniaturist Joris Hoefnagel between 1591 and 1596.
Artist: Joris Hoefnagel (Flemish/Hungarian, 1542–1600), illuminator, and Georg Bocskay (Hungarian, d. 1575), scribe. Date: 1561–1596.
