Carrières-Saint-Denis, painted by Claude Monet in 1872, depicts the small Seine-side village downstream of Argenteuil as seen from the painter’s studio-boat, its church tower and huddled rooftops mirrored in the river’s rippling surface. Rendered in the loose, broken brushwork of Monet’s early Argenteuil years, the canvas is now held in the collection of the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, one of a quietly celebrated group of riverside studies from the earliest years following the painter’s settlement on the Seine. A historically significant and warmly atmospheric work for any interior drawn to French Impressionism.

Artist: Claude Monet (French, 1840-1926). Date: 1872.
