Carrières-Saint-Denis (Carrières-Saint-Denis, aujourd’hui Carrières-sur-Seine), 1872 by Claude Monet

Carrières-Saint-Denis, painted by Claude Monet in 1872, depicts the small Seine-side village downstream of Argenteuil as seen from the painter’s studio-boat, its church tower and huddled rooftops mirrored in the river’s rippling surface. Monet rendered the scene in the loose, broken brushwork of his early Argenteuil years, using soft violets and golds to capture the reflected light of a quiet riverside afternoon. The painting, now held by the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, is counted among the foundational works of French Impressionism.
