Cap Martin (La Pointe du Cap Martin), 1884 by Claude Monet

Cap Martin, painted by Claude Monet in 1884 depicts the same rugged, pine-fringed point of the Riviera coastline, its tumbled rocks and windswept trees rendered in cooler, more muted tones beneath a pale sky. A distant sailboat rides the green swells at the edge of the horizon, adding a note of human presence to the wild, wind-scoured shore. Like its companion views of the site, the painting dates from Monet’s extended 1884 Riviera campaign, part of his first sustained engagement with the Mediterranean light.
